EHDD Architects, San Francisco, received the commission to design the 177,000gsf Science + Engineering Building for the new campus at the University of California at Merced in 2000. I was on the design team from 2001-2003. These images represent differing phases of the design process for the UC Merced lab.
One of my main areas of focus was the design of the shading for the exterior public spaces. I worked directly with ARUP Engineers to develop a fritted-glass sunshade that could be deployed at three scales through the project to effectively shade interior and exterior spaces in the harsh desert sun.
One of my responsibilities on the UC Merced lab was the design and detailing of the fritted-glass sunshades. These are drawings from the final CD set as well as computer model studies completed through the design process.
